I have been mulling this post for a while, I think you identified some unfortunately all to common startup "anti-patterns." I incorporated your archetypes, with full credit in http://www.skmurphy.com/blog/2010/05/12/customer-development-and-its-discontents/ because I think they speak to some real entrepreneurial failure modes.

A very prudent read. Thinking and talking about starting a company is fraught with dangers, identifying them early could minimize the chances of failure.

Its difficult enough in starting.

I myself fall in the fourth category, and its easy to fall in the trap of delusion and denial (per Apollo).

Healy, I am so glad you said it. I have been in one venture where, unfortunately, one of the core players could not distinguish between delusion and vision. Talking about anti-lean... major resources were wasted on the delusion, when a good thing was sitting right there for the taking. Ce la vit!

Healy, Thanks for the comment and I wholeheartedly agree! I've written about that dilemma before. Entrepreneurs cannot rely solely on what customers say, nor believe all that the industry veterans have to say when suggesting revamps to the business model. It requires a combination of "absorption" of the criticism, intuition, and a process for testing assumptions.

Re: your fourth point: There is a very fine line between delusion and vision when dealing with a potential new market/novel product!
